Tens of millions of people around the world are dead. Half of China is a nuclear wasteland. Mysterious flesh-eating spiders are marching through Los Angeles, Oslo, Delhi, Rio de Janeiro, and countless other cities. According to scientist Melanie Guyer, however, the spider situation seems to be looking up. Yet in Japan, a giant, truck-sized, glowing egg sack gives a shocking preview of what is to come, even as survivors in Los Angeles panic and break the quarantine zone. Out in the desert, survivalists Gordo and Shotgun are trying to invent a spider super weapon, but it’s not clear if it’s too late, because President Stephanie Pilgrim has been forced to enact the plan of last resort: The Spanish Protocol. America, you are on your own.

MY REVIEW:

I thought this was a good follow-up to The Hatching, and the ending has me chomping at the bit for the conclusion!

Things are just going from bad to worse in the sophomore novel in this series! Dr. Guyer has her hands full, trying to understand what these carnivorous spiders are and how they can be stopped. The President is getting pressure to drop nukes on the west coast like China, but she is reluctant to do so. Special Agent Mike Rich is trying to keep his daughter and ex-wife safe by getting them out of the city and holing up at the cottage owned by his ex-wife’s new husband. Across the ocean in the Outer Hebrides, Thuy and Padruig are safe (for now) on the island with Padruig’s grandfather, Aonghas. However, new infestations being found world-wide, filled with egg sacs in different stages of life. Some are warm and vibrating with life inside, while others are cool and hard like the one that was sent to Dr. Guyer from Peru. When a host from the quarantined California is able to leave, only to be found in Chicago where his body splits open and pours forth a river of spiders that look and act differently from the other ones, the President knows she has to take drastic action. She craters into pressure and decides to try to block the spiders’ migration by blowing up highways and fracturing the United States, everyone for himself so to speak. Meanwhile, the survivalists in Desperation, California are getting bored: They are TOO well prepared for the apocalypse. Shotgun and Gordo invent a type of weapon to be used against the spiders, and the President sends the Marines to go pick them up by helicopter and bring them to Maryland to meet with Dr. Guyer and test it out. The last 50 pages of the book bring this story to a new level of horror, and I am totally stoked to find out what happens in this trilogy’s finale, Zero Day, which is expected to be released in February 2018. The wait is going to be agonizing!

MY RATING:

4 stars!! It was really good, and you should put it on your TBR list if you enjoy horror!
